# Sterrenwacht Copernicus

> Public observatory in Overveen, near Haarlem, Netherlands. Since 1974 we welcome visitors for free to experience the universe up close through our telescopes on Friday evenings and the first Saturday of each month. We also run monthly lectures, an entry-level astronomy course (Sterrenkunde voor Iedereen) twice a year, and youth and school programmes. Run entirely by volunteers and recognised as an ANBI public benefit organisation.

- [Sterrenkijkavonden](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/sterrenkijkavonden): Elke vrijdagavond 20:00–23:00 (sept–mei) gratis toegang zonder reserveren. Bij helder weer gaat de koepel open en kijk je door de telescoop naar planeten, sterren, nevels en de maan. Bij bewolking of windkracht 5+ is de koepel dicht; er is dan een presentatie.
- [Star Viewing Nights (EN)](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/en/sterrenkijkavonden): Every Friday 20:00–23:00 (Sept–May), free entry, no reservation needed. The dome opens in clear weather to view planets, stars, nebulae and the moon through the telescope. Cloudy or windy: dome stays closed and a presentation is given instead.
- [Zonnekijkmiddagen](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/zonnekijkmiddagen): Eerste zaterdag van de maand 13:00–16:00. Veilig naar de zon kijken door speciale telescopen met zonnefilters; je ziet zonnevlekken en zonnevlammen.
- [Sun Viewing Afternoons (EN)](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/en/zonnekijkmiddagen): First Saturday of the month, 13:00–16:00. Observe the sun safely through specially filtered telescopes; sunspots and solar prominences are visible.
- [Lezingen](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/lezingen): Maandelijkse lezingen over sterrenkunde, weerkunde en ruimtevaart in de Zocherlounge, Zocherlaan 1, Bloemendaal. Aanvang 20:00, toegang €6, aanmelden verplicht. Donateurs krijgen korting.

## Educatie / Education

- [Basis Cursus Sterrenkunde](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/basis-cursus): Acht theorielessen + twee praktijkavonden, dinsdagavond 20:00–22:00. Onderwerpen: Copernicaanse revolutie, oriëntatie aan de hemel, zonnestelsel, levensloop van sterren, kometen/meteoren, sterrenstelsels/quasars/zwarte gaten, afstandsmeting, Big Bang. €150 inclusief Handboek Sterrenkunde (Govert Schilling) en planisfeer. Minimumleeftijd 16 jaar. Twee startmomenten per jaar (januari en september), cursus is in het Nederlands.
- [Entry Course Astronomy (Sterrenkunde voor Iedereen) (EN)](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/en/basis-cursus): Two intakes per year (January and September). 8 theory lessons + 2 practical evenings on Tuesday 20:00–22:00. €150 incl. textbook (Handboek Sterrenkunde by Govert Schilling) and planisphere. Minimum age 16. Course is taught in Dutch.
- [Jeugd & Scholen](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/jeugd): Schoolbezoeken en groepen voor kinderen tot 12 jaar (€3 per kind, €5 per ouder, minimum €60 per groep). Voor scholen vast tarief €65. Groep 1–6: ruimtereis door het zonnestelsel; groep 7–8: inleiding sterrenkunde, melkweg, komeet, werking telescoop. Maximaal 30 personen totaal.
- [Youth & Schools (EN)](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/en/jeugd): School visits and groups for children up to 12 years old. €3/child, €5/parent, minimum €60/group. Schools: fixed fee €65. Maximum 30 persons total per group.

- [Vrijwilligers](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/vrijwilligers): De sterrenwacht draait volledig op vrijwilligers. Minimaal 16 jaar, interesse in sterrenkunde, donateur worden is vereist. Taken: telescoop bedienen, rondleiden, kassa/koffie, cursusassistentie, onderhoud. Aanmelden via formulier of mail naar vrijwilligers@sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl.
- [Volunteers (EN)](https://sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl/en/vrijwilligers): The observatory is entirely volunteer-run. Minimum age 16, an interest in astronomy, and becoming a donor is required. Tasks: operating telescopes, giving tours, running the till/coffee, assisting courses, maintenance. Sign up via the form or email vrijwilligers@sterrenwachtcopernicus.nl.
