PAY ATTENTION: not at our own observatory
On Wednesday, August 12, a partial solar eclipse will take place. The eclipse begins at 7:17 PM, reaching its maximum at 8:11 PM, when 88% of the sun's surface will be covered.
Unfortunately, the Sun and Moon will be only 8 degrees above the horizon at that time, making the eclipse impossible to view from our usual location in Overveen.
Boulevard Location
Not to worry! From 7:00 PM to 9:15 PM, we will be at the Bloemendaal boulevard near the beach entrance to Moai by Rapa Nui (see map below).
We will set up with a specialized solar telescope and a smart telescope to offer a safe and clear view of the eclipse. Special eclipse glasses will also be available for purchase at €4.50 each. Even when only 12% of the sunlight reaches us, using an eclipse glass is absolutely essential.
The eclipse ends at 9:03 PM, and the Sun and Moon will set together shortly after at 9:13 PM. If the weather is clear, the entire eclipse will be visible, albeit just above the horizon. In case of overcast weather, we will clearly announce on this page if the event is canceled.

Perseids
August 12 also features the Perseids, the largest meteor shower of the year. We can admire these wonderfully from the Copernicus Observatory, so from 9:30 PM to 11:00 PM, you can join us to wind down with a cup of coffee or tea and hopefully catch a few shooting stars. Indoors, we will also provide extra information about both the solar eclipse and the Perseids.
Stopping by on the boulevard and access to the observatory for the Perseids are both free of charge.
